Help is available for parents

By Susan Platt

Parents, opportunities will abound this spring! Parenting-tool development is being highlighted this spring in Wayne County.
•Paul Anderson Ministries is hosting a parenting conference for the Wayne Area Youth Outreach (Wayout Ministries). It will be held Thursday, March 1, from 7 p.m. to 9 pm at the James E. Bacon Elementary School gym.The cost is $10 per ticket; child care is provided.
The focus of the presentation will be parent awareness of the pressures in our culture, parenting tips and free resources. Call (912) 537-7237 for more information.
•On Wednesday, March 28, at noon, the Exchange Club and Prevent Child Abuse-Wayne County will host the kickoff for National Child Abuse Prevention Month of April. The kickoff will be held at the Wayne Memorial Hospital gazebo. We will be "planting" 20 pinwheels signifying cases of substantiated child abuse in our county from July 1, 2010, to June 30, 2011. We celebrate that this number is down from 48 cases the year before!
Please come and join us for the planting and speakers from our area sharing what is being done to prevent child abuse. We want to nurture healthy families. E-mail familyconnection@waynehelp.com for more details.
•Parenting DVD materials are expensive and often unavailable. A new collection has been organized at the Wayne County Library. Seven parenting DVD courses are available for individuals, groups, agencies and churches. These DVD courses have been given to the library by Prevent Child Abuse-Wayne (PCA-Wayne), a committee under the umbrella of Wayne County Family Connection; individuals; and a church in our community.
The courses are Single Parenting That Works by Dr. Kevin Leman, Parenting the Explosive Child by Dr. Ross Greene and Dr. Stuart Ablon, Positive Parenting with a Plan by Dr. Matthew A. Johnson, 1-2-3 Magic and More 1-2-3 Magic by Dr. Thomas Phelan, Nurturing Parenting Program by Stephen J. Bavolek, and Shepherding a Child's Heart by Tedd Tripp. There are secular and Christian titles. Ask at the desk what is available.
We are continuing to build our collection so that groups and individuals can find appealing DVD courses to hone parenting skills, find workable ideas and help parents find solutions for challenging child-rearing situations.
We want to add titles to encompass several cultures and languages. If you have a DVD for parenting or if your church has finished showing a parenting series, please consider donating it to the collection at the library. We need your help. We offer these parenting materials for your use.
